Looking for a foodie alternative to Bonfire Night – then look no further.  Kilburn’s only Underground Night Market on Friday, 4th Nov at 6pm and Saturday, 5th Nov from 12 noon.  Music, food, bonfire and booze!!! and of course my little shots of deliciousness. 

I’ll be peddling my fabulous pudding shots, jams, jellies and damson gin by the shot. PLUS my free prize draw where you could win a complimentary class worth £55.

Queens Park Day: 11th Sept

Art of Puddings came to Queens Park Day last Sunday and a fantastic day was had by all.  We sold everything we brought along!!

300 dessert shots, Vanilla Cheesecake, redcurrant jelly, damson jam, damson cheese, plum jam & gooseberry jam, strawberry jam and elderflower cordial.  We had a great spot in the park, close enough to the main food stalls.  To our left we had Transition Town Kensal to Kilburn with their apple pressing team – they pressed 420 glasses of apple juice made from locally picked apples!!  and on our right a delightful father and son with the 23rd Willesden Scouts stall. Their massive jar of loose sweets proved too much of a temptation and at the end of the day with plummeting blood sugar – we’d all succumbed.

We were selling our usual dessert shots – mango fool, chocolate mousse and rote gruetze (red fruit pudding) with a delicious new edition, Apple Snow.  We had a bumper crop of cooking apples from the garden and so with a couple of kilos puréed and sitting ready in the fridge – apple snow fitted the bill,  It’s quick and easy to make and everyone loves it. Apple Snow was one of my favourite childhood desserts and I used to beg my mother to make it when the cooking apple season came around.  Here’s my recipe for Apple Snow adapted from my mum’s Apfel Schnee.

APPLE SNOW

Serves 8-10

1 kg  cooking apples (peeled, cored and chopped)
5 tbsp  soft brown sugar (according to taste)
small piece of cassia bark (or cinnamon stick)
Zest and juice of 1 lemon
4 egg whites
30g castor sugar
100 ml double cream

Put the apples into a pan with brown sugar and cassia bark, add lemon zest and juice, cover and simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring every now and again until the apples are cooked.  Take care that the apples don’t catch on the bottom of the pan. Remove the lid and carry on simmering for a couple more minutes until the mixture is dry.  Blend until smooth in a food processor or pass through a fine sieve or chinois.  Transfer to a large bowl to cool.

Whisk the egg whites by hand or in a stand mixer to soft peaks then add 30g caster sugar and whisk briefly until stiff.  Whip the cream separately until fairly stiff then carefully fold the egg whites into the cool apple purée finally adding the whipped cream.  Spoon into invidual dishes or one large dish and chill in the fridge for at least 2 hours.  Great with ginger tuiles or shortbread biscuits or sublime on its own.

AmnesTEA “Flaming June” Fundraiser 25th June

To celebrate Amnesty International’s 50th birthday this summer, the charity picked up on the “baking” zeitgeist and came up with its own take – AmnesTEA – an off the peg, fundraising event to raise money for human rights.  Although I’m not a member of Amnesty,  my teenage son is and was happy to help me with some of the setting up before hand.  I’d been to a couple of other cake events (via Clandestine Cake Club) and had enjoyed them so this was an opportunity to hold one of my own – invite guests and ask everyone to make a donation of at least £5 to Amnesty International.

Any excuse to get the best tablecloth out, bake a cake, make some fancy biscuits and invite my neighbours and friends to come over.  I prayed for good weather following days of very persistent rain.   We were not to be disappointed.  Once the morning rain had dried up, we had a hot, sunny day on which to enjoy our tea and cakes.

We had a brilliant jazz pianist in the form of Toby Nelms – a  student  at the Royal College of Music.  His extensive repertoire was impressive and made the event feel quite special. The following weekend he got a  booking to play at Clarence House.  Not bad!!

Tregothnan Tea, the only English tea produced in the UK

I must have made at least 25 cups of tea on the day.  I’d bought Tregothnan tea as I wanted give my guests a special treat.  The first few cups I produced were frankly undrinkable with people politely asking could they have builders tea please.   I quickly realised that the best way of drinking this ‘special’ tea was in fact without milk.  I recovered my composure and from then on in, the Tregothnan Afternoon Tea went down a treat with my guests.  Their Afternoon Tea is a blend of hand-plucked leaves and imported Darjeeling.  It has a delicate refreshing  taste with a citrusy note.  I’ve never visited The Tregothnan Tea Estates in Cornwall but hope to one day.

We raised £110 and even after everyone had taken the leftover cake home, we still had loads of lovely cake left.  (Note to myself for next time, invite a lot more non-bakers and maybe auction off cakes to the highest bidder!!)   As we were expecting a house guest the following day – I didn’t have to worry about making any desserts for the next two weeks!!!  Cake keeps remarkably well and can be served again with the addition of summer fruit, crème anglaise or just as it comes.

Tea for One

I love kitchen utensils and have a large collection of my own.  When I came across Ann Nazareth’s beautiful woven work, life-size replicas of the real thing, I longed to pick them up.

Her fabulous “Tea for One” evokes a bygone era when our mothers or certainly our grandmothers would have prepared afternoon tea and laid it all out on a tray like this one.

After taking a degree in Constructed Textiles at Middlesex University, Ann turned to basket making in  search of new techniques to transform her textile work into something more three dimensional.  Work in her south London studio is labour intensive.  “Tea for One” (2010) took four months to complete.  She told me that the tray alone took three weeks to make!

She weaves her intricate pieces using paper cord – a strong yarn – the same material still used by Lloyd Loom of Spalding to make its iconic furniture.  “Tea for One” is part of a collection of work called “Notions of a Domestic Idyll” inspired by the tedium of domestic routine.

You need a long spoon

Apparently someone once asked Ann  if they could use one of her ladles for cooking  – but being made from paper renders them impractical.  The perfect excuse not to do any more housework.

Utensils

One of my favourite utensils is my stainless steel whisk.  As I make a lot of desserts I use it practically every day. It’s both robust and flexible at the same time.  Maybe you have a favourite kitchen utensil?
